Another gem of a movie ! I am pretty damn sure most of you wouldn’t have heard of a small movie named “Oh My God ! ” (note how cleverly I capitalized all words to avoid trouble) that just released in India. It stars Vinay Pathak (again !), Divya Dutta and Saurabh Shukla.
Please please watch this movie. It is thoroughly entertaining and thought provoking .. isn’t that why movies were supposed to be made ?
It is the story of a normal middle class person (Vinay Pathak), who has everything from a decent job to a good wife (Divya Dutta, who is just brilliant in this movie !). Save for one thing. He believes he can make it big one day and his whole life revolves around this fact.
He even gets what he wants one day (this is a very minor spoiler in the big scheme of things), but the movie really kicks off after that with some mind-blowing acting by Vinay Pathak. This guy seriously is the torchbearer of independent cinema !
If this movie doesn’t make you think of money, life and happiness, I am sure you missed something. And still, it is thoroughly entertaining and funny ! Again a first time director Sourabh Srivastava. But it is mostly Vinay Pathak who makes it a one-man-show.
So please please do not miss this movie while it is still playing.
P.S. : Anyone who sits around cribbing about the quality of Bollywood movies needs to see some recent releases :
A Wednesday.
Mumbai Meri Jaan.
Welcome to Sajjanpur.
Dasvidaniya.
Oye Lucky Lucky Oye.
Sorry Bhai.
And now the icing on the cake : Oh My God !
2008 will go down as the year when Bollywood finally started to be truly different.

guess who
“Welcome to Sajjanpur” seemed like it was put out without ever having an Editor. You could have cut down 60m of the movie and would have still been able to keep the essence, convey what was supposed to be, and not enforce boredom.

You serious ?
Firstly, Welcome to Sajjanpur wasn’t about any particular story at all ! It was just about characters.
Ad I enjoyed almost every minute of it !
Save for a couple of unwanted songs, everything else seemed to fit very nicely.

I didnt like Dasvidaniya. I liked the characters and the theme though.
What i hate about this movie is that the actual intended events happen at regular intervals (say every 15 mins) and last for 3-5 minutes. The time period between these intervals (10 mins) is pathetically slow and boring.

@don paul : The only problem I had was the last couple of mins, but I think it would be unfair to take anything away from the movie for just that. But do let me know how you find it.
@Anonymous : Sorry Bhai, I thought was a great entertainer, mainly due the Boman Irani and Shabana Azmi. Unless you get into the theme, I am not sure you can find too many flaws. And it entertains you throughout. Which is why I feel independent cinema has come a long way from the boring but thoughtful movies of Govind Nihalani And Shyam Benegal to entertaining and thoughtful movies of 2008.
