Recently, French President Nicholas Sarkozy effected a ban on the burqa. Not to be left behind, the Sena supremo has made a similar demand for India.
Which brings me to another thought.
If the burqa is to be banned, why not the sari ? If the burqa is a sign of subservience, so is the sari in many households. If you argue that a lot of women wear the sari out of preference, the same can be argued of the burqa, I believe.
Okay maybe they are slightly different, but I am extrapolating.

The burqa debarrs a woman from interacting with the rest of the world normally. And vice versa.
The sari is a piece of clothing like any other. Makes you look good. Covers you up. Protects you form the weather.
I really dont know why you would make that comparison. Coz by your logic, we should ban all clothing and run around naked.

@Aarti : I have mentioned that the comparison to a sari is unfair and extrapolated.
I do not agree with banning the burqa coz it should be left to an individual. All I wanted to say is that I am sure there are more than a few Muslim women who would want to wear the burqa out of their own will.
