More than telling how I liked it, I wanted to write this post just to inform you that this movie exists.
Directed by debutante Kunaal Roy Kapur and written by Anuvab Pal, the movie is based on a play of the same name by the same crew. The premise of the movie is set when George W. Bush, visited India. In addition to the many diplomatic and political things on the agenda was a rather unique event – a meeting with one of the young faces responsible for shaping “The New India”. This is in fact true, the rest fiction.
So you have 6 candidates shortlisted who have to compete for the coveted handshake. The intellectual Bengali writer, Konkana Sen Sharma, the pseudo-’social worker’ Satchit Puranik, the caricatured Gujju stock broker Anand Tiwari, the dumb bimbo Ira Dubey (Lilette Dubeys younger daughter), the accent trainer Vivek Gomber and the geek Namit Das. It has a few other characters like the PR agency head who is given the task of shortlisting, which she likens to choosing the next Pope or Dalai Lama, and her assistant. The film is about everyone’s journey till the handshake.
It has more than a fair share of hilarious moments and the characters are fresh and new even though they are caricatured. The character I loved most was Ajay Karlekar (played by Satchit Puranik) as the social worker from Vidarbha. With a spot on accent and mannerisms (note the way he pronounces Ritu madam as Rutu ma’am), his best moment is when he is eliminated and leaves with an outburst against the elite ending it with “Jai Hind”.
And then he returns back in a second to complete it with “Jai Maharashtra”.
Great writing.
Leaving Konkana Sen Sharma, the rest of the cast reprise their roles from the play, so it is pointless to debate about the acting, it is spot on as expected.
Even if you don’t care about the message it tries to deliver, you would not be disappointed with the entertainment it provides. Do not miss this movie.
