This came up in a conversation today and something perhaps Muslim readers here can shed light on:
Why do Muslims say ‘peace be upon him’ when they utter the Prophet’s name?
There is a wiki page for PBUH which gives little explanation. Over to you ..

The fact that it’s in the Quran and Allah (swt) asks this off us (muslims) should be reason enough…
The quote on the wiki page is exactly what I was going to use here..”Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him, and salute him with all respect”..
This quote also especially signifies the importance of Prophet Muhammad (saw) in Islam..’cuz if you think about it.. Allah (swt) doesn’t pray five times a day, but asks us too..He doesn’t fast, nor pays the pilgrimage ..neither does he pay the zaka’t..(the five pillars of Islam)… but when it concerns the Porphet Muhammad (saw), HE (Himself) and His Angels send blessings to him (saw)… We as Muslims are told to send blessings and salutations. It’s just a matter of respect!
Also its worth ten good deeds. =))

Thanks for taking the hint and replying [:)]
I’m still confused. Allah doesn’t pray, but the Prophet surely did, no? So the Prophet must’ve gotten the blessings for his prayers. I still don’t clearly understand why blessings are sent to the Prophet.

In Sunni (Brelvi/believe in sufism) Islam, Prophet Muhammad (saw) is seen much more than just a man. He’s seen as the “noor” of Allah (swt). It is said that when Prophet Adam (as) was thrown out of Jannat for disobeying Allah (swt), he asked for forgiveness for hundreds of years until one day he remembered that when he was created, there was the Shahada (There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger) written on the seventh sky. Adam (as) asked Allah (swt) that if I am the first person to be ever created, then who is Muhammad (saw)?…Allah (swt) replied “if it wasn’t for Muhammad (saw), I wouldn’t have made the universe”… Adam (as) then asked for forgiveness “for the sake of Muhammad (saw)” and was forgiven and the earth was created….. The point of this story is to show that Prophet Muhammad (saw) has always been present as Allah (swt)’s noor..even when there was nothing else……and even now. We believe that He (saw) is infallible. Since we believe that He (saw) is spiritually present, blessings and salutations are sent to Him (saw) as a matter of respect whenever His (saw) name is mentioned. Like you would greet someone if they walked in..o-0…Im not sure if that example makes any sense.
There is also a hadith (saying of the Prophet Muhammad saw) that says: “If somebody hears my name, he should ask blessings upon me. When a person asks one blessing upon me, Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) sends ten blessings upon him, forgives his ten sins, and raises him ten degrees (in Paradise).”
