Gauri’s clever Ode to Modern Poetry:

It’s about variations in the lengths of its various lines
For variations give
it form.
And form, character.

sentences like these
make for complete
lines. An odd break

In hindsight, modern poetry is the reason I don’t appreciate poetry today. I loved the charm of poetry in school textbooks. A few years later, all around me I saw poetry that wasn’t poetry. I didn’t understand it so I developed a dislike.

I’m not a purist; everything has to evolve. But it is the responsibility of poets to hold my hand and take me from the old to the new — and to ensure that the new is worth having. Neither happened with modern poetry, so adios.
