In hindsight, modern poetry is the reason I don’t appreciate poetry today. I loved the charm of poetry in school textbooks. A few years later, all around me I saw poetry that wasn’t poetry. I didn’t understand it so I developed a dislike.

I’m not a purist; everything has to evolve. But it is the responsibility of poets to hold my hand and take me from the old to the new — and to ensure that the new is worth having. Neither happened with modern poetry, so adios.
