Mamta Banerjee:

“I know the Internet, I know computers, I know laptop. I have been on Facebook too, I have been learning how to tweet. I will pick this up soon. One needs to have a grip on these new tools to connect with people and the younger generation.”

Setting aside how much we’d like to poke fun at her incorrect usage of computer jargon, we can agree that more politicians need to start using social media tools. Not to be hip or cool or connect to the youth — although those are incidental advantages — but to increase transparency. It is easier for a politician to not engage with the press and be asked difficult questions than to evade questions in the form of tweets and messages directed at them.

That said, if I were Ms. Banerjee’s secretary I’d warn her that one cannot speak more than 140 characters at a time on Twitter.
