Sachin Tendulkar in a tweet earlier today:
I m praying for Shri Sathya Sai Baba’s quick recovery. Hope everyone will join me in praying for his return to good health.
I’m very curious how atheists who admire Sachin reconcile with this fact. Do they say that Sachin is an utterly delusional moron or do they consider religion and spirituality to be a dimension of his personality they have little to do with? And if it is the latter, do they extend that leeway to everyone?
As for devotees of the godman (or those who pray for someone on their death-bed to recover), most of them ought to know that he is not immortal. Yet, praying for recovery seems like an awfully selfish thing to do — something that only serves to validate their own faith.
There is a bit of curiosity as to whom his devotees pray to now that the person they consider god is not well. It’s really quite obvious: They pray to all other gods. Most continued to pray to their usual set of gods even as they were devotees of the godman. We are a polytheist society that way.
